語源
「arbuscule」はラテン語の「arbusculum」に由来し、「arbuscul-」は「arbor（樹）」の縮小形で「小さな樹」を意味する。
ラテン語の「arbusculum」（「arbor」の縮小形）がニューラテン語・学術ラテン語を経て英語に入り、菌根学や生物学で根の内部に形成される小さな樹状構造を指す専門用語になった。
当初は文字どおり「小さな樹」を意味していたが、次第に生物学において「菌根菌が根の内部に作る小さな樹状構造」という専門的な意味に変化した。
