語源
'arbitrariness'は形容詞'arbitrary'と名詞化接尾辞'-ness'から生じた。'arbitrary'は最終的にラテン語の'arbiter'（裁判官・目撃者）および派生語'arbitrarius'（裁定に依る）に由来する。
ラテン語の'ar biter'がLate Latinの'arbitrarius'（裁定者の判断に依存する）に発展し、フランス語の'arbitraire'などを経て中英語の'arbitrarie'／'arbitrary'となり、英語で接尾辞'-ness'が付いて'arbitrariness'が作られた。
当初は裁定者（判定を下す者）に関連する意味だったが、次第に一者の意志や裁量によって決まることを示す意味に変化し、さらに『気まぐれや恣意に基づく決定・行為』という現在の意味に一般化した。
