語源
『arabidopsis』は新ラテン語に由来し、属名「Arabis」（アブラナ科の関連属）とギリシャ語接尾辞「-opsis」（「見かけ、似る」を意味）から成る。
『arabidopsis』は植物分類学（新ラテン語）で「Arabis」＋「-opsis」として命名され、「Arabisに似る」を意味する語形として成立し、やがて現代の属名「Arabidopsis」として定着した。
当初は「Arabisに似る」という字義だったが、次第に固有の属名「Arabidopsis」、特にモデル種「Arabidopsis thaliana」を指す語へと意味が移った。
