語源
「apsinthion」は古代ギリシャ語の『ἀψίνθιον（apsínthion）』に由来し、語幹の『ψίνθ（psínth）』はニガヨモギ（苦い薬草）を指した。
『apsinthion』はラテン語の『absinthium』、その後古フランス語の『absinthe』へと受け継がれ、そこから英語の『absinthe（酒）』や学名の『absinthium』が生じた。現在の綴りである『apsinthion』はギリシャ語形を保存した表記である。
当初は「ニガヨモギの植物」を意味したが、次第にその苦味の性質が強調され、蒸留酒『アブサン』や苦味の意味にも用いられるようになった。
