'approximal'は後期ラテン語の'approximālis'に由来し、'approximare'（ad- + proximare） は「近づける」を意味し、'proximus'は「最も近い」を意味した。
'approximal'は後期ラテン語の'approximalis'から発展し、中世・近世ラテン語を経て、'approximate'などに類推されて現代英語の'approximal'となった。
