語源
「applique」はフランス語の「appliqué」（動詞'appliquer'の過去分詞）に由来し、さらにラテン語の'applicāre'（接頭辞'ad-'は「〜へ/〜に」、'plicāre'は「折る・結ぶ」）にさかのぼる。
19世紀にフランス語の'appliqué'から英語に入った。フランス語は後期ラテン語の'applicāre'、ラテン語の'ad-'＋'plicāre'に由来する。
当初は「（折ったり結んだりして）取り付ける・貼り付ける」を意味したが、次第に織物・裁縫の技法やその技法で作られた飾り片を指す専門的な意味に変化した。
