語源
「apostrophise」はギリシャ語の単語「apostrophē」に由来し、接頭辞の「apo-」は「離れて」を意味し、語幹は「向ける・回す」を表した。英語の動詞形は名詞「apostrophe」に動詞化接尾辞「-ise／-ize」を付けて作られた。
「apostrophē」はラテン語／古フランス語を経て中英語の名詞「apostrophe」になり、そこから現代英語の動詞「apostrophise（米:apostrophize）」が派生した。
元来は「（方向を）変える・回す」という意味だったが、やがて修辞的に「（人や物）に呼びかける」を意味するようになり、さらに書き言葉では「アポストロフィを付ける」の意味も生じた。
