語源
「apoplectic」はギリシャ語の「apoplēktikos」に由来し、「apoplēssein（打ち倒す）」という意味を含む語から来ています。
「apoplēktikos」は後期ラテン語の「apoplecticus」を経て中世ラテン語・フランス語を経由して英語の「apoplectic」になり、副詞形は形容詞に接尾辞「-ally」を付けて「apoplectically」となりました。
元々は医学用語として「卒中（突然の発作）」を直接指しましたが、時代とともに比喩的に「激怒した」や「非常に怒っている」という意味で使われるようになり、現代ではこれが主要な意味になっています。
