語源
'aphototropism'は現代で形成された語で、接頭辞'a-'（〜でない、〜がない）と'phototropism'（ギリシャ語の'phōs/phot-'「光」と'tropos'「曲がる、向く」）から。
'phototropism'は19世紀に科学用語としてギリシャ語語根から造られ英語に入った。'aphototropism'は後に否定の接頭辞'a-'を付けて作られた。
もともとギリシャ語要素は「光の方へ向く」を意味したが、否定の'a-'を付けることで「光に反応しない／光に向かない」を意味するようになった。
