語源
「Apalachee」はムスコギー語族に由来し（おそらくヒチティ語やアパラチー語の形 'apalahci' / 'apaláchi' から）、語根は「（向こう側の）人々」や「人々」を指すと解釈されている。
スペインの探検家によって「Apalache（または類似形）」と記録され、その名称は後にヨーロッパ人により地域名にも用いられ、スペイン語やフランス語を経て英語の「Appalachian（アパラチアン）」という地名に影響を与えたが、元の民族名としての意味は保たれている。
当初は特定の部族やその言語を指していたが、時とともに地理的な地域名や形容詞的な用法にも広がった。
