語源
「Apalachee」はムスコギ語族の言語圏（おそらくヒチティ語やアパラチー語の形）に由来し、記録された語形は「apalahci」や「apalachi」で、構成要素は「人々」や「向こう側の人々」（場所や民族を表す意味）を指すと解釈されている。
「Apalachee」は16〜17世紀にスペインの探検者によって記録され（スペイン語表記）、フランス語や英語に取り入れられて部族名として残り、やがてアパラチー湾などの地名に用いられた。部族名は植民地期を通じて伝播し、「Appalachian（アパラチアン）」の語形成にも影響を与えた。
当初は特定の先住民集団を指す名称だったが、次第にその言語や地名、地域名にも用いられるようになり、現代では主に部族名とそれに由来する地名を指す語として残っている。
