『antrum』はギリシャ語 'ántron' から後期ラテン語に入った。ギリシャ語 'tympanon' はラテン語で 'tympanum' となり、医学ラテン語で 'tympanic' を生じた。両部を結合した 'antrotympanic' はニューラテン語の医学用語として生まれ、19～20世紀に英語の医学語彙に採用された。
