語源
'antlion'は英語に由来し、特に'ant'（アリ）＋'lion'（ライオン）の合成語で、'ant'は昆虫のアリを指し、'lion'は比喩的に獰猛な捕食者を意味した。
'antlion'は中英語期に'ant-lion'という合成語として形成され、アリに対してライオンのように振る舞う生物を表した。語形は現代英語までほぼ同じ形で残った。
当初は文字通り「アリのライオン」、すなわちアリを捕食する生き物を意味しており、その基本的な意味は時間を経ても幼虫（穴を掘る段階）と成虫の両方に用いられる点を含めて大きく変化していない。
