「antiscion」はギリシャ語の「antískion」に由来し、「anti-」は「反対（向かい）」を、「skia」は「影」を意味した。

「antískion」は後にラテン語（中世ラテン語の形態「antiscion」など）を経て、17世紀頃の占星術文献で英語に取り入れられた。
