古物に関する・古風
語源
「antiquitarian」はラテン語の『antiquarius』（『antiquus』に由来）に起源があり、『antiquus』は「古い」「古代の」を意味した。
ラテン語の『antiquarius』は中世ラテン語を経て英語の『antiquarian』などに影響を与え、後に英語で形容詞・名詞の『antiquitarian』として用いられるようになった。
当初は単に「古代・古物に関する」という意味だったが、英語ではその意味が保たれる一方で「古風な」「保守的な」といった比喩的用法も生じた。
