語源
「antipsychotic」は近代英語で、接頭辞「anti-」（ギリシャ語由来で「反対・対抗」）と「psychotic」（ギリシャ語の「psyche（心・魂）」と医療接尾辞から成る語）を組み合わせて作られた語です。
「psychotic」はギリシャ語の「psykhōsis（心の状態）」を経て近代ラテン語・英語に入り、「antipsychotic」は20世紀半ばに精神病に作用する薬を指す医学用語として作られました。
当初は文字どおり「精神病に対する（反対の）もの」を意味しましたが、次第に精神病性障害の治療に用いられる薬を特に指す語になりました。
