語源
'antipodes' はギリシャ語の語 'ἀντίποδες' に由来し、'anti-' は「反対」、'pous/ποδ-' は「足」を意味した。
'antipodes' は後期ラテン語の 'antipodes' を経て中世英語へ入り、最終的に現代英語の 'antipodes' になった。
当初は文字通り「足が反対側にある」という意味だったが、次第に「地球の反対側にある地点」を意味するようになり、その後「完全に正反対のもの」という比喩的な意味も持つようになった。
