「antiphysic」は中世ラテン語の「antiphysicus」に由来し、最終的には「anti-（反対）」と「physis（自然）」というギリシャ語要素から来ている。
「antiphysicus」は中世・後期ラテン語を経て、学術・医学ラテン語を通じて英語の「antiphysic」となり、近代初期の医学文献で用いられた。
