語源
「antiphrastic」はギリシャ語の語『antiphrastikos』に由来し、『anti-』は「反対」、『phrazein／phrasis』は「話す・発話」を意味した。
『antiphrastikos』は後期ラテン語・中世ラテン語の『antiphrasis』を経て、近代英語で形容詞『antiphrastic』として用いられるようになった。
