語源
'antient'は古フランス語の'ancien'に由来し、さらに遡るとラテン語の語根（下記参照）で、ラテン語の'ante'は「以前・昔」を意味した。
'antient'は古フランス語'ancien'や中英語の'auncient'から変化し、現在の綴り'ancient'と並存したが、'antient'は古風な変種として残った。
当初は「古い」や「以前の時代に属する」という意味で、時間の経過後も核心的な意味は変わらず、綴りが古風になった（現在は'ancient'が一般的）。
