語源
「anti-supernaturalism」は接頭辞「'anti-'（ギリシャ語'anti'で『～に対して』の意）」と「'supernaturalism'（'supernatural'＋接尾辞'-ism'で『超自然主義』の意）」から成る語である。
「supernatural（超自然）」はラテン語の要素『super-（上、超）』と『naturalis（自然の）』に由来する。接尾辞'-ism'で『超自然主義』が作られ、近代英語ではそれに接頭辞'anti-'を付けて『反超自然主義』を表す語が作られた（19〜20世紀に哲学・神学の文脈で用いられるようになった）。
当初は単に『超自然主義に対する反対』を示したが、時間を経て哲学・科学・神学における超自然的主張全般に批判的な立場を指す語として広く用いられるようになった。
