「anti-neutrino」は接頭辞「anti-」(ギリシャ語'anti'で「反対／対抗」)と「neutrino」(イタリア語の'neutro'「中性」の指小形)から成る複合語で、ニュートリノの反対の粒子を示す。
「neutrino」は20世紀初頭にイタリア語で「小さな中性のもの」を意味する指小形として作られ（物理学ではエンリコ・フェルミらによって広められた）、その後英語で接頭辞「anti-」を付して対応する反粒子を表す語として「anti-neutrino」が生まれた。
元は「小さな中性のもの」を意味したが、接頭辞との結合により現代物理学では「ニュートリノの反粒子」を意味するようになった。
