語源
「anti-household」は、ギリシャ語の接頭辞「anti-」（「反対」を意味する）と、古英語の要素「hūs」（「家」）と「heald」（「保持する、人」）から発展した英語の語『household』を組み合わせてできている。
『household』は古英語の『hūs』＋『heald』から中英語の『houshold』を経て現代英語の『household』になった。接頭辞『anti-』はギリシャ語からラテン語・古フランス語を経て英語に入り、現代では『anti-war（反戦）』などのように他の名詞と結びついて形容詞を作る。『anti-household』はこの構成に従った近年の語形成である。
当初は文字どおり『反・世帯』という意味だったが、使われるにつれて世帯の利益や福祉に対して有害・反対である政策や態度を表す比喩的な意味で用いられるようになった。
