語源
「anti-algae」はギリシャ語接頭辞の「anti-」（ラテン語・近代英語を経由し『反対・〜に対して』を意味）と、ネオラテン語/ラテン語の「alga（複数形algae）」（『海藻』）の結合に由来します。
「anti-algae」は「anti-bacterial」「anti-fungal」などの複合語にならった近代英語の造語です。関連する形容詞「antialgal」は「-al」接尾辞を付けて作られました。
当初は単に「藻に対する（反対）」を表していましたが、現在は「藻の発生を防ぐ・抑える・除去する作用」を意味する語として使われます。
