「anti-Nicene」はギリシャ語接頭辞の「anti-（〜に対して）」と、ニカイア（ギリシャ語で「Νίκαια」）に由来する「Nicene」から成る。ニカイアはニカイア公会議が開かれた都市である。
「Nicene」はラテン語・ギリシャ語でニカイアに関する語に由来し、英語では19世紀以降の神学・史学の文献で「anti-」を付けてニカイア派の教義に反対する立場を表す語として形成された。
当初はニカイア公会議の決定や教義に反対することを指し、現在も同様の意味で使われるが、「ante-Nicene（ニカイア以前の）」と混同されることがある。
