語源
「Nicene」は後期ラテン語の語『Nicaenus』に由来し、『ニカイアの（出身・に関する）』を意味する（ニカイアはギリシャ語『Νίκαια』に由来し、『νίκη（勝利）』に関連）。
『Nicene』は後期ラテン語の『Nicaenus』（中世ラテン語で用いられた）から中英語を経て現代英語の用法になり、ニカイアやその公会議に関する事柄を指すようになった。
当初は『ニカイアの（都市に関する）』を意味していたが、次第にニカイア公会議やニカイア信条に関する（教義的）な意味で使われるようになった。
