語源
「anthropopithecus」はギリシャ語由来で、特に「anthropos」と「pithekos」から来ており、「anthropos」は「人間」、「pithekos」は「猿」を意味した。
「anthropopithecus」は19せいきの分類学で類人猿や化石標本の属名として作られたが、のちにそれらの標本は『Pan』や『Australopithecus』などの現代的な属に振り分けられ、この語は現代の分類学では使われなくなった。
最初は正式な属名として「人間のような猿」を意味したが、時間とともに有効な現代の属名ではなく、歴史的・旧来の用語になった。
