語源
「Anthesterion」は古代ギリシャ語の『Ἀνθεστήριον』（anthestērion）に由来し、『ἄνθος』（花）と接尾辞『‑τήριον』（場所・行事を示す）から成る。
古代ギリシャ語の『Ἀνθεστήριον』がラテンの学術語形の『Anthesterion』として用いられ、やがて現代英語に古典語句として取り入れられた。
当初は「花の（祭）/花に関連する期間」を指したが、時間とともに主にその月名（および祭の期間名）として定着した。
