語源
「antheridium」はギリシャ語の単語「antheridion」に由来し、接頭辞・語根の「anther-」は「花（の部分）／葯（やく）」を意味し、接尾辞「-idion」は縮小辞で「小さい」を意味した。
「antheridium」は新ラテン語（学術ラテン語）を経て英語に入り、18〜19世紀から生物学文献で用いられる形になった。
もともとは「小さな葯／花」の意があったが、学術的な用法で次第に「下等植物や一部菌類の雄の生殖器官」を指すように意味が絞られた。
