語源
「antepalatal」はラテン語の接頭辞「ante-」(「前」)と「palatal」(ラテン語 'palatum'、『口蓋』)の結合に由来する。
「palatal」は近代ラテン語 'palatālis'(ラテン語 'palatum' に由来)を経て英語に入った。「antepalatal」は近代の音声学用語として 'ante-' と 'palatal' を結合して作られた語である。
当初は文字通り「口蓋の前」を意味していたが、現在は音声学で「硬口蓋の直前で調音される」という意味で用いられている。
