語源
『antanagoge』はギリシャ語、特に語『antanágōgē』(ἀντανάγωγη)に由来し、接頭辞『anti-』は「反対・応答」を、語根『anágō』(ἀνάγω)は「引き上げる・戻す」を意味した。
『antanagoge』は古典ギリシャの修辞学語彙を通じて後期ラテン語や中世ラテン語に入り、学術的・修辞的文献で用いられた後、英語の専門用語として定着した。
当初はギリシャ語の文脈で「（何かを）引き戻す・反して導く」といった広い意味があったが、次第に「否定を肯定で相殺する」「反論する」といった特定の修辞的意味に狭まった。
