「antagonistical」はギリシャ語の「antagonistes」から由来し、接頭辞「anti-」は「反対」、語根の「agon-（agōn）」は「争い・競技」を意味した。
「antagonistical」はラテン語系の『antagonisticus』などを経て英語の形容詞『antagonistic』となり、さらに派生した形として『antagonistical』が生じた。
