語源
「anode」はギリシャ語の語 'anodos' に由来し、接頭辞 'ana-' は「上へ」あるいは「上向き」を、'hodos' は「道」を意味した。
19世紀初頭にギリシャ語 'anodos' に基づく新ラテン語／フランス語の語形から現代英語の科学用語として採用され、『anode』という電極の名称になった。
元来は「上への道」を意味していたが、科学用語として『電流の入る道（電極）』という意味で使われるようになり、現在の電気・電気化学的意味に発展した。
