語源
「annunciation」はラテン語の「annuntiatio」（または動詞形の「annuntiare」）に由来し、接頭辞の「ad-」が同化した形と「nuntiare／nuntius（使者・告知）」に関係している。
「annuntiatio」は古フランス語の「anonc(i)ation／annonciation」を経て、中英語の「annunciation」となり、現代英語の「annunciation」になった。
当初は「告げる行為」を意味していたが、次第に聖書的な文脈で「マリアへの天使の告知」を特に指すようになり、同時に世俗的な「告知」の意味も残った。
