語源
「annunciation」は後期ラテン語の語『annuntiatio』に由来し、語根の『annuntiare』（ラテン語『nuntius』に由来）は「知らせる、告げる」を意味した。
「annunciation」は中世フランス語の『annonciacion』や中世ラテン語の『annuntiatio』などを経て中英語に入り、現在の英語『annunciation』になった。
当初は「報告、告知」を意味していたが、次第に「マリアへの告知」という特定の宗教的意味や「公式な告知」という一般的意味を持つようになった。
