語源
「annexation」は中世ラテン語の語『annexatio』に由来し、'annex-'はラテン語の『annexus』（接頭辞'ad-'は「～へ・～に」、'nectere'は「結びつける」）から来ている。
『annexation』は中世ラテン語の『annexatio』から（古フランス語の『annexion』、中英語の『annexacioun』を経て）現代英語の『annexation』になった。
当初は「結びつけられた状態」を意味していたが、時とともに「（特に領土を）付け加える・併合する行為」という現在の意味に発展した。
