語源
「annexation」はラテン語の「annexatio」から来ており、接頭辞の「ad-」（変化して「an-」）は「〜へ・〜に向かって」を、語根の「nectere」は「結びつける」を意味した。
「annexatio」は中世フランス語の「annexacion」や中英語の「annexacioun」などを経て、現代英語の「annexation」になった。
最初は「結びつける行為（付け加える行為）」という意味だったが、次第に特に「領土の併合」や「付属・増築」を指す用法が確立した。
