語源
『ankylosis』はギリシャ語の『ankylōsis』に由来し、要素の『ankyl-』は「曲がった」「ゆがんだ（＝硬直や癒合を示す）」を意味した。
『ankylōsis』は後期ラテン語／医学ラテン語として『ankylosis』に採用され、形はほとんど変わらず医学用語として英語に入った。
当初は「曲がっていること・癒合していること」を指したが、現在では主に関節や歯の癒合による硬直・運動不能という医学的状態を意味するようになった。
