語源
「animalculist」は英語で「animalcule（小動物）」＋行為者接尾辞「-ist」から成り、「animalcule」は新ラテン語の animalculum（animal の指小形「小さな動物」）に由来する。
「animalculist」は17〜18世紀の初期顕微鏡学とともに生まれ、当初は「アニマルキュール」を観察する人を指し、のちに胚学での精子前成説（スパーミスト）の支持者も指すようになった。
当初は微小生物の観察者・研究者を指したが、次第に前成説（アニマルキュリズム）の支持者の意味も帯び、現代では主に歴史的・古風な語となっている。
