「anglophobic」は英語で、「Anglo-」（ラテン語「Angli」（アングル人・英人）に由来）と接尾辞「-phobic」（ギリシャ語「phóbos」（恐怖）に由来）から成る。
「Anglophobia」に形容詞語尾「-ic」が付いて19世紀後半に現代英語の「anglophobic」となった。
当初は「イングランド（英人）に対して恐怖・敵意を抱く」の意で、現在もほぼ同義で、そうした敵意を示す言説・政策にも用いられる。
