「amphidromous」はギリシャ語由来で、要素の「amphi-」と「dromos」から成り、「amphi-」は「両方・周り」、「dromos」は「走る・行路」を意味した。
「amphidromous」はギリシャ語の'amphidromos'を経てNew/Modern Latinに入り、19—20世紀の生物学用語として英語に取り入れられ、現代英語の『amphidromous』となった。
