語源
「alraune」はドイツ語の『Alraune』に由来し、要素の『al-』は古高ドイツ語の『alb』（『妖精／エルフ』）に関連し、『rūna』は『秘密／神秘』を意味した（この合成語はマンドレイク／妖精の根を指した）。
『alraune』は中高ドイツ語の『alrūne』や古高ドイツ語の『alrūna』から現代ドイツ語の『Alraune』へ変化し、その後英語に借用されて文学や民話の文脈で用いられるようになった。
当初はマンドレイク（植物・根）を指していたが、時間とともに（1911年の小説などの）文学的用法を通じて『人工的に作られた女性』や超自然的な人型存在を意味するようにもなった。
