語源
「Yankee」はおそらくオランダ語の「Janke」に由来し、これは「Jan」（英語のJohn）の縮小形で、'Jan'が「ジョン」を意味し、接尾辞'-ke'が「小さい（縮小形）」を示した（つまり「小さなジョン」）。
オランダ語の「Janke」が植民地時代に使われ、英語化されて「Yankee」となった。時代とともに地域的なあだ名から一般的な用語「Yankee」「Yankees」へと変化した。
当初は「小さなジョン」というあだ名を示していたが、次第に「ニューイングランドや北部の人」を意味するようになり、その後「アメリカ人一般」を指すこともあり、野球チーム名にも用いられるようになった。
