語源
「Tungusian」はロシア語での民族名「Tungus」(トゥングース)に由来し、英語で形容詞化・国民語化する接尾辞「-ian」を付けて作られた。
「Tungus」はロシア語でエヴェンキなどの関連民族を指して記録され、英語ではこの形が採用され、19世紀に接尾辞「-ian」を付けて「Tungusian」が作られた。
当初はロシア語話者が呼んだ特定の民族を指していたが、時代とともに人々を指す名詞と、それらの民族や言語・文化に関する形容詞の両方で使われるようになり、「Tungusic」と意味が重なることがある。
