『territory』はラテン語の『territorium』に由来し、『terra』は「大地・土地」を意味し、接尾辞『-orium』は「場所」を表した。
『territorium』は古フランス語（例：『teritoire』／『territoire』）やアングロ・フランス語を経て中英語の『territorie』になり、最終的に現代英語の『territory』になった。
