語源
「state」はラテン語の「status」から来ており、もとの動詞「stare」は「立つ」を意味し、「status」は「状態・立場」を意味した。
「state」は古フランス語の「estat」（アンゴ・フランス語では「estat」）を経て中英語の「state/ stat」となり、現代英語の「state」になった。
当初は「立っていること・状態・立場」を意味していたが、時を経て「政治組織・政府」を指す意味などに拡張され、現在の複数の意味合いに発展した。
