語源
「spiritualism」はフランス語の『spiritualisme』に由来し、語根の『spirit（ラテン語 spiritus）』は「呼吸・霊」を意味し、接尾辞『-ism』は「教義・体系」を示す。
『spiritualism』は19世紀半ばにフランス語の『spiritualisme』（『spiritual』＋接尾辞『-isme』）から英語に採り入れられ、運動や教義を表す英語名詞になった。
当初は『霊との交信の教義や実践』を意味していたが、時を経てその意味は大きく変わらず、より広く『物質より精神を重視すること』という意味でも使われることがある。
