語源
「Scrum」は英語に由来し、特に『scrummage』（19世紀中頃）の短縮形で、『scrummage』は初期のフットボールやラグビーにおけるボールを巡る集団の争いを指した。
『Scrum』は『scrummage』（約1860年代）から短縮されたもので、『scrummage』は中英語の『scrimmage』に関連する。ラグビーの規定化を通じて、近代の語形『scrum』（約1870年代）が確立した。
当初は「乱暴な争い・小競り合い」を意味し、特にボールを巡る集団争いを指した。時間とともにラグビーの公式なフォーメーションに特化し、後に密集した群衆やアジャイル手法の呼称へと比喩的に拡張された。
