語源
「Quechua」はスペイン語に由来し、もとはケチュア語の単語『qichwa』（『kichwa』や『qeswa』とも綴られる）から来ており、元は「中央の／温暖な谷」地域を指し、転じてそこに住む人々やその言語を指した。
『qichwa』は先住ケチュア語からスペイン語（Quechua, Quichua）に入り、その後英語にも『Quechua』として借用された。
元々は地名的な谷の意味やそこに住む人々／言語を指していたが、次第に人々・言語・語族の総称として英語・スペイン語で定着した。
