語源
「national」はフランス語の『national』に由来し、それは後期ラテン語の『nationalis』（ラテン語の『natio』から）にさかのぼり、『出自・出生・民族』を意味した。
『nationalis』は古フランス語の『national』に変化し、中英語を通じて英語の『national』になった。
当初は「出生や出自に関する」という意味だったが、のちに「国に関する（国全体に関する）」という現代的な意味に変化した。
